Themed Weeks at Post Avenue Brings Adventure to the Summer Season

Post Avenue students coloring during a themed week.Post Avenue students had an incredible summer session filled with fun and learning. Starting each week with a theme kept the sense of adventure alive throughout the summer session.

The school’s teachers and staff organized six weeks jam-packed with activities covering topics from celebrating the Fourth of July to traveling and the Olympics. The children also enjoyed spending plenty of time outdoors on water play days.

“We do themes throughout the school year while utilizing the Creative Curriculum. During the summer we moved away from the Creative Curriculum and chose themes where we could capitalize on our outdoor space and current events,” said Curriculum Coordinator Sheri Dvorak.

A highlight was Camping Week, where students embraced the outdoors, visited their garden, and participated in a book walk featuring Michael Rosen’s, “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” For the walk, teachers set up several stations with passages and enlarged illustrations from the book.

At each station, props were set to give the children a tangible experience of the family’s journey. A splash pad by the river scene allowed the children to hear the water sloshing about and feel the unevenness of the river floor.

During Travel Week, students expanded their knowledge of the world. The children packed their suitcases and explored and learned about different countries around the globe. Then they moved on to Ocean Week and deepened their knowledge of the world’s oceans, the sea creatures in them and the surrounding continents.

For the last week of school, the theme was Ice Cream, a sweet treat that is a favorite of many students. There is so much in store for the upcoming school year, and the teachers and staff at Post Avenue can’t wait to welcome students—both old and new—in the fall.
