BCCS Preschools Celebrate Students at Moving Up and Graduation Ceremonies

During the past few weeks, BCCS preschoolers, their families and teaching teams celebrated a year of growth and discovery. Since fall, students have learned about themselves and each other, while embracing every opportunity to learn and grow.

Since May 29, families have gathered for moving up/graduation ceremonies at Barbara C. Wilson Preschool, Round Hill Road Preschool, Westbury-Post Avenue Preschool, and the Children’s Education Center.

During astronaut-themed ceremonies on June 18, Westbury-Post Avenue students completed classroom activities and performed for their families.

“It’s really amazing to see the difference from the start of the school year, when they came in and were keeping to themselves to now being with their friends,” Sheri Dvorak, Westbury-Post Avenue Program Supervisor, said addressing parents. “I want to thank all of you for supporting us. . .It was a great, great year.”

In the Foxes classroom, Grace McGinley, Special Education Teacher, led students as they tapped along to music – and took turns placing eyes, mouths, and ears on a stick figure character through song. Parents proudly watched as each child waited for their turn and followed directions. Finally, the students sang Laurie Berkner’s “Rocketship Run” with their parents dancing along.

Round Hill Road Preschool

Round Hill Road Preschool welcomed families to its new campus, where parents gathered in the gym for a bubble dance party, a slideshow showcasing the memories of the past year, and  refreshments.

Among those celebrating were Susan and Victor Wang, whose two children attended the school this year.

“So far, it’s a great experience,” Susan said. Their oldest son Vincent is graduating to kindergarten, while their youngest is moving up to a new classroom. “He started talking here. He was nonverbal when he started school here. He became very extroverted, very happy, very talkative, and his speech became so much better.”

Susan credits her youngest son Valentino’s progress to the hard work of the school’s speech and occupational therapists

The Children’s Education Center

The Children’s Education Center (Ed Center) celebrated its preschoolers on June 18 with a colorful crayon-themed event. Parents and community members gathered at the Ed Center gym where the students took center stage. After announcements and a slide show highlighting the year’s achievements, each student received a certificate and posed for a photo.

Missy Capobianco was especially surprised to see Luka, her son, present part of a graduation message to the crowd.

“I had no idea he was doing this,” she said. “His speech has gotten so much better. I would recommend this program to anyone.”

Luka’s teachers informed Missy that her son was reading at a third-grade level, and she’s been proud to support his newfound interest by doing more reading at home.

Barbara C. Wilson Preschool

From June 15–18, Barbara C. Wilson (BCW) Preschool hosted 15 graduations. Students celebrated their graduation or continued education with BCW.

The Parents Association decorated the room for the graduation ceremonies, as well as other photo opportunities throughout the school so that families can take photos they will always remember. They also put together a gift for students to take home, including custom beach towels printed by Spectrum Designs.

Donning caps and gowns, students walked into the classroom with their teachers and teacher assistants as “Pomp and Circumstance” played and proud family members watched on.

Wilson Preschool Class of 2026"As part of the graduation ceremony, students performed songs and dances they’ve been practicing, and they each received a symbolic diploma. Families, staff, and fellow classmates cheered for each student.

Among the family members who attended was Jennifer Rufle, who graduated from the same program in 1989. Diane Condy, Director, was her teacher. Jennifer said she never wanted to leave preschool because it was the best time of her life.

“I remember my classmates,” Jennifer said. “I have pictures. . . It gave me the best foundation for now.”

Knowing the positive impact BCW had on her, Jennifer sent her children there, including a child who is graduating this year.

“It’s really individualized care for each child,” Jennifer said. “After you leave here, the support continues. “

Before saying goodbye to BCW, graduating students will enjoy their last Summer Session.

“It’s bittersweet,” Diane said. “The parents were really thrilled to see the progress that they made; everyone is. It’s so great that they’re able to meet their graduation and participate in it. It’s just another milestone for them.”

As the school year comes to an end, ceremonies have been a welcome opportunity for parents to connect with school teams, one another, and celebrate one of the first educational milestones for their children.
