John “JJ” Ostuni has always loved music. Now, through weekly piano lessons at Guitar Center in Carle Place, he’s building on that passion one note at a time.
Since late May, JJ has been attending weekly sessions at Guitar Center in Carle Place with Daniel McCormack, Direct Support Professional (DSP). Both share a love of music, making Daniel a natural fit to support JJ during his piano lessons.
“JJ loves it,” Daniel said. “To see him performing, not only learning songs from a teacher but hopping on the piano and playing songs that he’s heard, he’s amazing.”
JJ is naturally musically inclined. He constantly hums his favorite tunes and rocks out to all kinds of music. During the hour-long, one-on-one sessions, JJ curates a playlist of his favorite songs and works on playing the melody through chords.
While JJ doesn’t yet read music, he has a naturally sensitive ear and has excelled at the piano. He’s developing his skill playing songs he’s heard on the radio and in the media—everything from Sesame Street theme songs to the popular jingle for TopDog Law.
Behind every lesson is thoughtful planning and coordination from the team at the Children’s Residential Program (CRP). Staff work together to identify each child’s interests, coordinate opportunities to explore them, and document their experiences to ensure they continue participating in activities they enjoy.
“The team is there to facilitate that discovery process where they have a sense of individualism so they have something to look forward to that’s just for them,” said Cassie Bradshaw, CRP Director.
As JJ continues developing his musical talents, each lesson is helping him build confidence and learn more about music. We can’t wait to hear all of the beautiful, new music JJ will share.
