Learning & Growing Continues During Summer Break

Young people at the Children’s Residential Program explore and enjoy new experiences during summer break

Three residents of the Children's Residential Program at the aquarium.Summer break from the Children’s Education Center brings a change of routine for the young people living at the Children’s Residential Program (CRP) and this year, staff have packed the time with new experiences built around what each person enjoys. Summer trips included the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, a food truck rodeo, the Queens County Farm Museum, a concert at the Jones Beach Bandshell, and so much more.

“This year, we’re trying to do more than usual during the summer,” said Cassie Bradshaw, Director of the CRP.

Brandon Lyons, Recreation Coordinator for the CRP, said that when planning activities, he often asks the young people what they enjoy. Those interests are as varied as the young people themselves. In addition to planned experiences, exercise is also part of their regular routine. They go for walks, ride bikes, or use the gym.

A resident of the Children's Residential Program at the aquariumCandace Skeet, a manager at a Lido Beach residence, added that these outings give the young men at Lido Beach a chance to see their neighbors and say hello. “It’s definitely important.”

The summer activities also give staff opportunities to get to know the young people they support in different settings. “The staff goes to these activities for the kids, but they also learn a lot themselves,” Cassie said. “They get to know the kids, what they like and don’t like. For some staff, these are new experiences, so it helps them feel part of our community.”

We hope all the young people in the CRP have a great summer break. Thank you to everyone who helps make these recreation opportunities possible.
