Seashells, water play, and conversations about family vacations are all part of the summer session at the Barbara C. Wilson (BCW) Preschool in Woodbury.
The six-week session, which runs from July 1 to August 11, helps students continue building important skills while exploring curriculum on ocean animals, the beach, and other summer topics.
“It’s very important,” said Diane Condy, BCW Director. “They need to continue to work on their skills for success.”
Although the summer session follows a regular school-day routine, teachers make sure there is plenty of time for summer fun. When the weather is pleasant, students play outside on the playground, along with water and sensory activities designed to support their development.
“And we do, for the full six weeks, the same study,” said Diane. “Water and sand play are especially good for children this age. They get to explore their senses. There’s a lot you can do with water play. You can work on visual tracking and occupational therapy skills.”
Walking through the halls of BCW, you’ll see bulletin boards filled with art featuring ocean and beach themes, including jellyfish with streamers, colorful beach balls, and shells on the seashore representing each student from a class. Pictures displayed throughout the school encourage students to ask questions and spark conversations about what they notice.
Teachers also encourage conversations about students’ summer experiences, helping connect classroom learning to family life.
“A lot of our kids sometimes take vacations over the summer. We talk about that and going on vacation with your family,” Diane said.
We hope the students at Barbara C. Wilson enjoy a fun summer at school, learning about the world around them and building the confidence to explore!
